It is my experience that when you type in the words church web design in any search engine..the you get an onslaught of choices. When designing a church website for your ministry it is never one size fits all. Some smaller companies setup their websites in frontpage or dreamweaver and then update the site as customers email updates. This method is ok but it is not preferred. The best option for Church Website design is through a content management system.
A content management system is a system whereby the website is built off of a template, but is sliced to communicate with a database and xml system. This type of approach takes a bit longer to setup for developers but in the long run can save hours of headache for the website developer and the customer. About 99% of all updates can be done via any browser by anyone in the church who has been given the right to access the administration. Their are many open source choices out there which are very good, but must be customized to work for a specific industry.
Some of these Open source programs include, Typo 3, Drupal, Mambo, and Joomla. Joomla is th newest of the bunch and is gaining popularity. Joomla is a program which has been developed by the same people who helped develop the Mambo open source project. Many of the original Mambo developers thought Mambo was going in the wrong direction for an open source project, so they jumped ship to start a new open source project.
Joomla really looks to be shaping up to be the best open source option out their today. The rumor is that the originators are Christians as well....that is definitely a plus!
